Paddleboarding on the West Coast

Well, summer and its long, warm days are winding down for most of us in Michigan, but that doesn't stop Kyle and I from getting outside and trying something new. As usual with us, this weekend trip was mostly unplanned and spontaneous, however; there were two key factors we knew would be happening.

First, the greatest harvest of garden variety tomatoes and hot peppers would be happening and as a result a good pint of salsa would be happening. Yes, I'm kicking myself that no pictures of this salsa or the jalapeno poppers stuffed with with cream cheese and wrapped in strips of crispy bacon that graced our friday-date-night-in table were taken, but oh well, we're just getting into this blog thing. As a note I guarantee your man will LOVE you, and on you, when you make these and if he says "Woah! that's way too many!" simply say, "No, dear just trust me, you'll thank me in about 10 minutes when they're almost gone."

Secondly, an attempt to succeed at this new phenomena, this seemingly super simple water based activity that has come to sweep this part of the country. THIS being of course the SUP, the Paddleboard. Basically a surf board with a paddle. Pretty straightforward right? Well it is, and it isn't. Since we were already in a West Michigan lakeside town that solved a lot of issues. We went up to Mackinaw Kite Co. in downtown Grand Haven,  got a couple boards and headed out to Pigeon River near his childhood home in West Olive.
This was the perfect spot to practice the technique of "kneel-standing." After a few wobbly moments we were both standing and paddling up stream. SUP is a great way to explore on the water, they are so quiet we were able to sneak up on a few good sized bass, pike, blue herons, turtles, butterflies, dragonflies and even a couple out canoeing.  After an hour or two, we headed 5 minutes down the road to the real deal, Lake Michigan.

Paddleboard Success

That is where Emaley's finesse took the cake.  Kyle Talking now, as a side note.   So we hauled the boards down to the big lake to see if we could handle some wave action,  cause big waves matter.    Turns out they matter more for me then they do for Emaley.   She was up in no time, cruising around  on her board like a queen.   I the jester spent my time attempting to stand, falling and using my pain to make the queen laugh.   Oh. well I got those jalapeno poppers latter, so it was worth it.

As it turns out you can take your significant other back to your home town and have a good time.  We did something neither of us had done before.  Our simple date night dinner of Jalapeno Poppers and Football worked out great, too.  Ahh, its the simple things in life, like her kisses.

We'll see where life takes us next weekend,  maybe a Spartan Football Game! Go Green!
